Downloading podcasts

Introduction

This page describes how Judith Everett can subscribe to and download podcasts.

The basic procedure is:

  1. Get the URL of the podcast you are interested it
  2. Subscribe to the podcast by telling your podcast-downloading software the URL
  3. Get your podcast-downloading software to check for and download new episodes of your subscriptions

Finding podcasts

  1. Find some podcasts; you could try:
  2. Podcast publishers typically provide subscription URLs in several formats for different software. The format you want is called RSS. So on the podcast’s web page, you need to find the link for downloading it’s RSS feed. Often this is denoted with the icon rss
  3. Right-click on the appropriate link and select ‘Copy Link Location’, this means you can then paste it into your podcast-downloading software.

Subscribing

Alexis Huxley installed podracer as the software to actually do the checking for and downloading of new episodes. He also set up some start menu items to edit the subscriptions file.

  1. From the Start menu, go to accessories and ‘Edit podcast subscriptions’; this starts a text editor editing the file containing the list of subscriptions.
  2. Paste the previously-copied link in to the file on a new line.
  3. Close the editor window, saving when prompted whether to do so.
  4. To unsubscribe, it is enough to delete the appropriate line from the subscriptions file.

Checking for and downloading new episodes

Alexis Huxley installed podracer as the software to actually do the checking for and downloading of new episodes. He also set it up to automatically check for and download new episodes every 4 hours. The files will appear in your temp/podcasts directory. So no action is needed here.
