CZ-SK-HU-AT

Introduction

This is a self-made route of 1184Km covering four countries (Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria), three capital cities (Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest), two rivers (the Morava from Olomouc to Bratislava, the Danube from Bratislava to Budapest and again from Bratislava to Vienna) and two large lakes (Balaton, Neusiedlersee).

Our plan was to cycle the distance in 17 days (average 70Km/day) and to rest for 4 days in Győr, Hévíz, Hegykő (near Sopron) and Breitenbrunn (on the Neusiedlersee). In reality, we cycled 1293Km in 17 days (average 76Km/day) and rested 4 days in Győr, Hévíz, Hegykő and Vienna.

The Good, the bad and the ugly

  • good: three distinct sections to the trip (Czechia/Slovakia, Danube, Western Hungary) (Suzie)
  • good: most campsites in Hungary had swimming pools (Alexis)
  • bad: surprising lack of decent swimming opportunities on the big lakes; our own fault, more research needed! (Alexis)
  • bad: Neusiedlersee at Breitenbrunn was too choppy for us to do SUP; our own fault, more research needed! (Alexis)
  • bad: frequently centre-less villages in Hungary made lunchtimes difficult; we ate a lot of studentenfutter! (Alexis)
  • bad: swimming pools not withstanding, campsite facilities in Hungary were generally low quality (Alexis)
