Krakow-Passau

Introduction

This self-made route of 1306km, based on our earlier CZ-SK-HU trip, our earlier Vltava trip, with a bit of Poland too.

Our plan was to cycle the distance in 21 days (average 62km/day), to split the cycling with two short train journeys from Žilina to Vrútky (to avoid the dangerous alternative by road) and from Brno to Jindřichův Hradec (to not use up all our vacation allowance on one trip) and to rest for 4 days in Tarnów, Liptovský Mikuláš, Bankská Štiavnica and Horní Vltavice (on a loop passing the source of the Vltava river).

In reality, we cycled the distance in 20 days (skipping one rest day due to having done more than enough hills) and cycled 1346Km (average 67Km/day).

The Good, the bad and the ugly

  • good: Tarnów (first 5 photos below) is lovely (Alexis) as is Piešťany (Suzie)
  • good: the stretch of the Dunajec cycle path that we used was popular with cyclists and picturesque (Suzie)
  • bad: combination of high temperatures and hard cycling around Banská Štiavnica meant we were reluctant to return there on rest day (Alexis)
  • bad: cycling infrastructure in Slovakia is better than our first trip but still patchy. Some great, local cycle paths (notably Terchova to Žilina) but still a lot of cycling in traffic (Suzie)
  • ugly: in Slovakia there were attempted nighttime robberies at 22% of the campsites that we stayed at but due to our own precautions nothing was actually stolen (Alexis)
